• Zoo for Two

I had a great time on Saturday going to the zoo with my nephew.

With his brother out of town, I thought he might enjoy getting out of the house for the afternoon, and I thought the zoo would be a good place for me to take a few practice photos as I try to learn more about my camera.

We went to Panda Express for lunch before we went to the zoo. It was awesome to see Grant down two servings of Orange Chicken. He needs an Orange Chicken wheelbarrow for Panda days.

Once at the zoo, we walked quite a bit, along with all of the other visitor taking advantage of half price day. We saw Gene Parmesan about every 50 feet or so, in animal enclosures or by trails, in animals, rocks, and plants, principally because Grant loves the character of Gene Parmesan in the excellent TV classic “Arrested Development.”

We did pretty good getting to most things, and it was a nice day to be there. But it was hot. We had to stop for a cup of liquid humidity to get us going after an hour or so. The polar bears weren’t out. The cats were all sleeping in the shade. A wacky Tasmanian Devil stumbled around its enclosure when we came upon it, like a crazy kid looking for sugar. What’s up, dude? He was kooky.

We stopped after the zoo on the way home at Dairy Queen, but the DQ we went to was in crisis because I guess the power went out on all of their storeroom and kitchen equipment moments before we got there. We walked into the dining room which was half full still, and the manager greeted us with the bad news. Grant still had time to get a picture taken with the DQ Stuffed Muppet Cone Guy. That was good.

We went on over to Blake’s after that (after we called everything around us Blake’s and talked about how Napolean Dynamite definitely does not need a sequel ever) and got milkshakes. They were good. We also made up a catchy song, “Everyone Likes A Dirt Clod”, which we riffed on for at least 5 minutes. I think the song has some promise, as a rap song, or as a smooth jazz light favorite.

It was a great opportunity for me to spend some time with Grant. He is a smart and creative kid with a good heart.

My highlight of the day, besides our making the Dirt Clod song, was when, leaving the zoo, he gave me a bog old hug out of the blue and said “Thanks for making this day great.”

That meant a lot to me. Along with the Dirt Clod song.

    About

A web programmer by day, I somehow still spend a lot of time thinking about relationships, God, and the significance of grace and love in daily events. I am old school in the sense that I believe in the reality of sin, and in the need of each human heart for deliverance to the Divine. I am one of those who believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that you can find most answers to life's pressing issues in Him and His Word, the Bible. I ain't perfect, and a lot of the time I ain't good, but by God's grace and kindness, I am forgiven and free.
