• About Bruce

A web programmer by day, I somehow still spend a lot of time thinking about relationships, God, and the significance of grace and love in daily events. I am old school in the sense that I believe in the reality of sin, and in the need of each human heart for deliverance to the Divine. I am one of those who believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that you can find most answers to life's pressing issues in Him and His Word, the Bible. I ain't perfect, and a lot of the time I ain't good, but by God's grace and kindness, I am forgiven and free.

I don’t have a lot today. I spent much of it like I often seem to do on long holiday weekends- doing nothing. And inevitably, I tell myself “Next time, I won’t waste it.” And that is the pain of it. When the long weekend comes, I plan nothing. I have no motivation. I...

I need to find a better way to get writing done. Friday and Saturday mornings often involve sitting in some public space under the loud drone of some unfamiliar music, spending money on food or on coffee, trying to squeeze something useful out of my head for, most of the time, the blog. And...

“The secret is, if what we need and want is missing, we begin by going back to where we last saw it.” – Anne Lamott I saw this quote by Anne today and thought, “Wow- that is a pretty interesting insight.” I spend so much of my mental life looking back, and a lot...

My mind works in strange ways at times. Like, let’s take bisections. A bisection is when something spits into two things. Roads are involved a lot in bisection: roads separate city blocks and farm fields, and roads themselves split, and diverge to two different destinations. Which is what happens with our choices as well....

Frequently now Tim is returning to a habit of going out and walking some around downtown midday during the work day, and I try to join him. It is nice to just go out and breathe some fresh air and move your arms and legs, and it is nice to see what is going...

    The Book and the Bill

    by  •  • LifeStuff • 0 Comments

When I was consolidating containers on Sunday, in one of them were a few books that had been passed to me from my folks. One of those items was a book that had been passed to them from my dad’s aunt, Ruth Welton. It was a nice old hardbound volume, so I picked it...

To Fly, You Must Leave the Ground

When my dad graduated from his drafting program at Oklahoma State back in the day, he wasn’t sure where he was gonna end up. He figured it would probably drawing stuff for an oil company since that was a hot regional thing. It turns out the Space Race found him when a recruiting team...

    Good Morning from El Malpais

    by  •  • LifeStuff • 0 Comments

The desire for a day trip hit me on Saturday afternoon, so after considering a few options, it was a good time to go to El Malpais, the lava field “badlands” west of Grants, New Mexico. The big caveat for me was going to be there, but being there at some nice vantage point...

    Quiet Saturday

This morning I slept in a bit and early on had a desire to jump in the truck and drive somewhere pretty. I ended up doing bills this morning and thinking about potential destinations before I ended up talking to my folks, and then meeting them for lunch at the Quarters for some barbecue...

    The Pertinence of Potok

    by  •  • LifeStuff • 0 Comments

I was thinking tonight about Chaim Potok’s “The Chosen”, and “My Name is Asher Lev”, and about a few others of his books really. I was thinking about them because it is no secret that I’ve loved his books, and return to them every decade, it seems, in waves. They contain something deeply inward,...

When he got off of the transport- an interstellar 10-speed that was an exact replica of the one he had loved to ride all around Indianapolis before it happened- an attendant in a white suit with a green tie met him visually, nodded, reached out for the bike, and pointed at the 20 pairs...

    Tick Tock

The Cubs beat the Reds tonight 7-5 for their second straight win and I fell asleep on the small couch in front of the electronic cinema for the second and third half-innings of the game. It felt like I slept hard and I was disoriented for a few moments when I woke up, but...

    The Audacious End of Arlen

    by  •  • Writings • 0 Comments

It wasn’t surprising it ended like that. Arlen had always been intrigued by the unusual and the immense. Instead of pushing cars across the living room floor, as a child he would constantly practice leaping from the top of furniture. As a five-year old, he once came home basted in grease after he found...

Sometimes in the middle of the workday, Tim and I take a walk. Sometimes we find a discarded office chair on a street corner by a quiet intersection. Sometimes magic happens. Sometimes. Sometimes the light never goes red. — Photo Credits: Tim Price

    Reporting from Mother’s Day, USA

Today I didn’t write anything, and I didn’t cook anything. I did make coffee and I didn’t burn it. I did watch a video on an eagle that got its beak shot off by a hunter that had a prosthetic put on it to replace it. That was cool. My sister’s exchange student left...
